Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has found that 60 types of drugs produced by 41 pharmaceutical companies in Himachal Pradesh have failed quality standards. These drugs are not limited to basic medicines but include painkillers, anti-infectives, multivitamins, medicines for intestinal worms, heart diseases, COPD, insomnia, diabetes, high blood pressure, allergies, gastric issues, and nerve pain. Alarmingly, sensitive categories such as injections, lotions, and eye drops were also found substandard, which could directly impact patients.
In July, out of 151 drug samples tested nationwide, 143 were found below standard quality and eight were identified as counterfeit, with Himachal contributing the largest share. Samples were collected from industries located in the BBN (Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh) region, as well as Una, Kala Amb, Paonta Sahib, Solan, Parwanoo, Nurpur, and Sansarpur Terrace, and tested in state and central laboratories. The tests revealed failures in labeling, solubility, weight uniformity, and sterility, all basic quality parameters.
Additionally, samples from other states also failed quality tests, with 83 samples from across India found substandard. The report noted that seven samples from Bihar and one from Ghaziabad were counterfeit, produced by unauthorized companies using other brand names.
CDSCO has ordered that all substandard and counterfeit medicines be immediately removed from the market to prevent risks to public health.
