Dr. Pankaj Lalit, Director, Department of Language & Culture, HP Inaugurates Three-Days International Film Festival in Shimla,
National Award winning actress Seema Bishwas was the Celebrity guest at the festival
The picturesque city of Shimla was transformed into a hub of cinematic celebration as the three-day International Film Festival of Shimla (IFFS) kicked off with grandeur on August 16, 2024. The festival, inaugurated by Director, Department of Language & Culture, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Pankaj Lalit (HAS) promises to be a memorable event for film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and artists from around the globe.
The grand inauguration ceremony took place at the iconic Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, where a vibrant audience gathered to witness the opening of this prestigious film festival. Dr. Pankaj Lalit in his opening speech, emphasized on the importance of such cultural events in promoting Himachal Pradesh as a premier destination for arts and cinema. He highlighted the festival’s role in fostering international cultural exchanges and providing a platform for both established and emerging filmmakers.
“Shimla has always been a place where the art and culture flourish. The International Film Festival of Shimla is a testament to our commitment to nurturing and celebrating artistic talents from across the globe,” said Dr. Pankaj Lalit. “We are thrilled to host this festival, which not only showcases diverse cinematic works but also contributes to the local economy and cultural richness.”
Dr. Lalit also inaugurated the exhibition “A photo gallery tribute to Actor Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand celebrating the Centenary Year of both actors.
In IFFS, there is a special section BACHPAN dedicated to the children cinema, where specially curated films for children are being screened.
The festival commenced with an impressive lineup of 105 films from 27 countries and 22 states, reflecting a broad spectrum of genres and styles. From thought-provoking documentaries to heartwarming dramas, the films screened on the first day captivated the audience and set the tone for an exhilarating festival experience.
One of the highlights of the festival is the special interactive session with acclaimed Indian actress Seema Biswas. Following the screening of her recent film, Biswas engaged with the audience in a candid and insightful conversation. Her presence was a significant draw for attendees, offering a rare opportunity to gain deeper insights into the Indian and regional film industries.
Seema Biswas, known for her powerful performances in films such as “Bandit Queen” and “Water” shared her personal experiences and challenges faced throughout her illustrious career. She spoke passionately about the evolving landscape of Indian cinema, highlighting the increasing recognition and opportunities for regional films both within India and on the international stage.
During her interaction, Biswas reflected on the challenges of breaking into the film industry, particularly for women and those from non-mainstream backgrounds. She praised the growing support for independent and regional filmmakers, noting how film festivals like IFFS play a crucial role in providing visibility and fostering talent.
“The journey in the film industry has never been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Events like the International Film Festival of Shimla are vital for creating spaces where diverse voices can be heard and appreciated,” Biswas remarked. “She is delighted to be here and share my experiences with such a passionate audience.”
The festival is set to continue over the next two days, with an array of screenings, panel discussions, Masterclasses and networking opportunities for filmmakers and industry professionals. The program includes a mix of feature films, short films, and documentaries, showcasing a rich tapestry of stories from different cultural perspectives.
Festival Direcor Pushp Raj Thakur said that the International Film Festival of Shimla also offers an excellent platform for local filmmakers and artists to showcase their work. By featuring films from Himachal Pradesh alongside international entries, the festival highlights the region’s growing contribution to the global film industry.
The other two simultaneous screening of IFFS held at Model Central Jail Kanda distt Shimla and Model Central Jail Nahan, Distt Sirmaur for inmates. A special inaugural ceremony held at both prisons. Sh Susheel Thakur Superintendent of Model Central Jail, Kanda and Sh Vinod Chambyal, Model Central Jail, Nahan released the festival booklet in their prison premises and film screenings held for inmates after the inauguration with inaugural film Mrs Tendulkar directed by Alok Verma starring Ms Seema Biswaas.
27 countries and 22 states are participating in this three days prestigious cinematic event promises to celebrate the art of storytelling through the lens of diverse cultures and perspectives. In International category filmmakers from United states of America, Belgium, Iran, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Turkey, Nepal, Egypt, Bangladesh, Italy, Poland, Argentina, Sweden, Afghanistan, Australia, France and Dubai are participating.
While twenty two states are participating from India viz., Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur, Assam, Delhi, Punjab, West Bengal, Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
