A review meeting of vendors and Enforcement was held under the chairmanship of Sh. Mandip Singh Brar, IAS, Secretary Local Government & Urban Development, U.T. Chandigarh, with the officers/officials of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC).
Sh. Sumeet Sihag, Joint Commissioner, MCC, in the presence of the Commissioner, MCC, briefed the participants on the current status of street vendors in the city and the measures undertaken by the Municipal Corporation for effective monitoring of street vendors and vending zones. Various measures have been taken by Municipal Corporation to ensure that only legal vendors operate from their allocated vending locations like strict enforcement and challaning and cancellation on non-payment of vending fees etc.
During the meeting, the Secretary Local Govt. & Urban Development issued directions to the Municipal Corporation to complete the marking of all sites at 46 designated vending zones in the city within one month.
Furthermore, directions were issued to provide Smart ID Cards to all active street vendors, clearly indicating their allotted vending sites operating on real time data with the enhanced security features so that it cannot be forged or copied. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and effectively curb the menace of subletting and illegal vending in Chandigarh. Directions regarding development of Application for better monitoring through which geographical coordinates can be accessed and compared on real time basis were also given to MCC and Department of IT which will consequently lead to Geo- fencing of vending sites.
The Enforcement Wing of the MCC has also been directed to remove all unauthorized vendors from various sectors across the city.
