Allegiant Air Targets Southern California, Challenges Breeze with New Burbank Routes

BURBANK, CA – The skies over Southern California are set for a new wave of competition as U.S. ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Allegiant Air has announced plans to add Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to its growing network in early 2026. The move positions Allegiant to capture a share of the Los Angeles area market, directly challenging fellow budget airline Breeze Airways.
The announcement marks a significant development for Hollywood Burbank Airport, which is quickly becoming a new battleground for ULCCs. Both Allegiant and Breeze Airways are entering the market following the notable departure of Avelo Airlines. Avelo, which once considered Burbank a cornerstone of its operations, ceased all flights from the airport earlier this year, creating a vacuum that competitors are now eager to fill.
Allegiant will launch two new routes from the convenient Southern California airport, which serves as a popular alternative to the much larger Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). In a bold competitive stroke, Allegiant will go head-to-head with Breeze Airways on nonstop service to Provo, Utah (PVU), a key regional hub.
The direct competition on the Burbank-Provo route signals a strategic rivalry between the two carriers. Breeze Airways, the brainchild of JetBlue founder David Neeleman, has already established its presence in Burbank, and the route to Provo is a key part of its network. Allegiant’s entry will offer travelers more options but will undoubtedly put pressure on pricing and passenger loyalty.
“The Los Angeles basin is a major market, and we are thrilled to bring our unique brand of affordable, nonstop travel to Hollywood Burbank,” a representative for Allegiant stated. “We believe our service will be a welcome addition for residents seeking convenient vacation options without the hassle of a larger airport.”
For travelers, the arrival of Allegiant at BUR is welcome news. The increased competition between ULCCs typically leads to lower fares and more travel choices. Both airlines operate on a similar model, offering low base fares with add-on fees for everything from seat selection to carry-on bags. This strategy, as detailed in reports on the evolution of budget airlines, allows them to appeal to price-sensitive leisure travelers.
The second route Allegiant plans to launch from Burbank has not yet been officially announced, but industry analysts speculate it will connect to one of Allegiant’s established bases in the Mountain West or Pacific Northwest, consistent with its point-to-point network strategy.
As early 2026 approaches, all eyes will be on Hollywood Burbank Airport to see how this new dynamic plays out. With Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways vying for the same cost-conscious passengers, travelers in the Los Angeles area are set to become the ultimate winners.
