Tadepalli: YSR Congress Party leader Pothin Mahesh has raised serious concerns regarding the misuse of social media by the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party. He accused these parties of targeting anyone who shows admiration for individuals and parties they dislike, suggesting that they are resorting to revenge tactics through social media platforms.
During a press briefing at the party’s central office in Tadepalli, Mahesh emphasized the need for social media to be used for positive purposes rather than as a tool for harassment and intimidation. He pointed out that while these parties invest heavily in advertising campaigns, they simultaneously resort to posting obscene content against those they oppose. Citing a personal experience, Mahesh noted that actor Pawan Kalyan, disturbed by posts about his daughter, pursued legal action to have the offenders jailed.
Furthermore, he highlighted incidents where party activists, including members of Jana Sena and TDP, are reportedly mistreating young children such as Devi K, who is facing undue harassment at the hands of certain Deputy Speaker’s aides. Mahesh demanded immediate action from the Director General of Police (DGP), urging that cases be registered against the accused under the POCSO Act.
Alarming Trends in Political Vendettas
According to Mahesh, the coalition government, led by Chandrababu Naidu, has not limited its so-called “revenge politics” to opposition party leaders and officials. He criticized the TDP and Jana Sena for escalating their attacks to involve families and even children, indicating an alarming trend of intimidation aimed at individuals showing affection towards parties or persons disfavored by them.
He raised concerns about the psychological impact of these actions, suggesting that such harassment could drive individuals to the brink, including cases of suicide, all while these parties leverage social media to derive a twisted sense of pleasure from their posts.
The Distortion of Innocent Interactions
Mahesh brought attention to a recent incident where a child took pictures with former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy during his visit to support former MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi in Vijayawada. He noted that even this innocent interaction was distorted and ridiculed by TDP members, reflecting poorly on the moral compass of the politicians involved.
Criticizing the press for failing to uphold journalistic ethics, Mahesh highlighted the absurdity of allowing public officials to make derogatory remarks about a child, questioning whether this reflects any sense of decorum or ethical standards in journalism.
He specifically called out several social media handles that have indulged in vulgar trolling, including accounts linked with TDP women leaders, who have also joined in mocking the innocent child. The misinformation, including altered identities of the child’s parents, has further contributed to their distress.
A Call for Action Against Wrongdoings
Mahesh posed critical questions about the righteousness of using trivial political disagreements to target vulnerable members of society, especially children. What kind of community do we envision if the innocent are dragged into these baseless political vendettas? He implored the DGP to act quickly and file cases under the POCSO Act against the social media operatives who have harmed the young girl, Devi Karreddy. He also urged the Home Minister Anitha to advocate for legal actions against the perpetrators to put an end to these atrocities.
