East Coast Railway Surpasses Scrap Sale Target Ahead of Schedule
Bhubaneswar, March 22, 2025:
In a remarkable achievement, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has successfully met and exceeded its Scrap Sale target of Rs. 250 crore well before the financial year’s conclusion. The Railway Board had set a target of Rs. 250 crore for the 2024-25 financial year, which was impressively achieved on March 21, 2025—ten days ahead of schedule. As of this date, ECoR has recorded a total scrap sale of Rs. 265.62 crore, surpassing the original target.
East Coast Railway General Manager Shri Parmeshwar Funkwal congratulated the entire team involved in the scrap disposal process for their outstanding efforts. This milestone has been made possible due to the consistent guidance and meticulous review of the scrap disposal system by Principal Chief Material Manager Shri Prem Narayan.
This accomplishment was made possible through 204 auction dates conducted across various divisions of ECoR, including Khurda Road, Sambalpur, Waltair and the Scrap Yard at Carriage Repair Workshop (CRW), Mancheswar. These divisions facilitated the sale of various scrap materials such as condemned rolling stock, including locomotives, coaches, and wagons, along with scrap rails, permanent way fittings, and miscellaneous workshop scrap. Additionally, ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic scrap as well as condemned machinery, vehicles, and office equipment, were auctioned on an “as is where is” basis.
By efficiently disposing of scrap, ECoR successfully converted “waste to wealth” to the tune of Rs. 265.62 crore as of March 27, 2025. Furthermore, the removal of scrap from railway premises contributes significantly to environmental sustainability by reducing its adverse impact on the surroundings.
In the 2024-25 fiscal year, ECoR earned Rs. 265.62 crore from scrap disposal before the end of the financial year, compared to Rs. 258.16 crore in 2023-24. The Railway Board had initially set a target of Rs. 250 crore.
ECoR has consistently surpassed the scrap sale targets set by the Railway Board for the past five years. In its ongoing efforts to maintain a scrap-free and environment-friendly railway zone, ECoR has ensured the maximum disposal of scrap from its jurisdiction.
Scrap generation is an inevitable outcome of industrial activities involving machinery, tools, and assets. After completing their service life, these assets need replacement for better performance and safety. To facilitate timely disposal, ECoR has been conducting e-auctions through its dedicated Indian Railways E-Procurement System (IREPS) portal since 2013. More than 4,000 vendors have registered on this portal, ensuring a transparent and efficient auction process.
