LANGKAWI, 6 JUNE 2025: Mention Africa’s Big Five and images of lions and elephants come to mind. But tucked away in Malaysia’s mystical Langkawi archipelago is another set of marvels — smaller, stranger, and just as captivating.

Welcome to the world of Langkawi’s Flying Five. Here, on this island where rainforest meets reef and ancient legends float on sea mist, nature has evolved to defy gravity. On islands like Langkawi, where resources are limited, and survival often means staying off the ground, many creatures have found astonishing ways to take to the air — or, at least, glide through it. The result? A cast of five airborne residents: the Flying Fox, the Colugo, the Flying Snake, the Flying Squirrel, and the Flying Lizard.

Of the five, only one truly flies: the Flying Fox, Langkawi’s majestic fruit bat and one of the largest bats in the world. With leathery wings stretching nearly a metre across, they take to the skies each dusk from Pulau Dangli, a small island near Teluk Yu. At twilight, hundreds rise like smoke into the orange sky, gliding in search of ripe island fruits. By dawn, they return to roost — silent, upside down, and otherworldly — in their coastal tree havens.

Then there’s the Colugo, an elusive nocturnal glider that looks like something between a lemur and a hang-glider. Often clinging to tree trunks in the island’s denser jungle interiors, this gentle herbivore stretches a web of skin called a patagium—the most expansive of any gliding mammal — to coast silently from branch to branch. Its closest relatives? Not rodents, but primates. Its movements are so smooth. You’ll likely never see it unless you know what you’re looking for — a shadow melting from bark, drifting on air.

Even stranger is the Flying Snake, part of the Chrysopelea family — the only snake on earth capable of gliding. Native to Southeast Asia’s tropical forests, Langkawi’s variety flattens its ribcage mid-leap, transforming its body into a serpentine wing. The result is a graceful undulation that lets it “swim” through the canopy. Despite its acrobatics, it’s harmless to humans — though perhaps not to the frogs and lizards it stalks in the trees. If you find yourself hiking at twilight, you might glimpse a blur that seems to levitate between trees. These are Langkawi’s Flying Squirrels — including the striking Giant Red Flying Squirrel and the pale-bellied Red-cheeked Flying Squirrel. Silent, crepuscular, and ghostly, they glide effortlessly through the dusk, often mistaken for jungle spirits. For generations, locals have whispered stories about these gliders — a blend of biology and folklore.

Finally, the smallest aerial wonder: the Flying Lizard, or Draco volans — also known as the Flying Dragon. These tiny reptiles deploy rib-extended wings, like miniature parachutes, allowing them to glide distances of up to 60 metres. Spotted most often clinging to tree trunks or zipping through gaps in the forest canopy, they descend to the ground only to lay eggs in shallow hollows, vanishing again into the treetops just as quickly.Together, these five creatures aren’t just biological curiosities. They’re part of a living, breathing ecosystem — one that has adapted, survived, and soared, quite literally, in harmony with the island’s ancient rhythms.

Langkawi’s “Flying Five” might not roar or charge like their African counterparts. But in the stillness of its jungles and the quiet awe of those lucky enough to spot them, they offer something just as stirring: a glimpse into evolution’s most graceful answers to the challenge of survival.

This isn’t the first time Islamabad has cast off the bilateral route. Pakistan previously suspended the Simla Agreement after India revoked Article 370 in August 2019, a move that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has declared the 1972 Simla Agreement “a dead document,” signaling a seismic shift in Islamabad’s posture on Kashmir. In a blunt televised statement, Asif said Pakistan has reverted to the 1948 UN-backed stance, calling the Line of Control a ceasefire line rather than a recognized boundary.

The remarks arrive amid escalating tensions and renewed scrutiny of Pakistan’s long-held positions on bilateral agreements with India.

Khawaja Asif asserted that the bilateral framework between India and Pakistan had disintegrated. “The Simla Agreement is now a dead document. We are back to the 1948 position, when the United Nations declared the LoC a ceasefire line following the ceasefire and resolutions,” he said. “Going forward, these disputes will be dealt with multilaterally or internationally.”

The Defence Minister didn’t stop there. He cast doubt on other accords, saying, “Whether the Indus Waters Treaty is suspended or not, Simla is already over.”

This isn’t the first time Islamabad has cast off the bilateral route. Pakistan previously suspended the Simla Agreement after India revoked Article 370 in August 2019, a move that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status. Since then, Pakistan has taken the issue to international platforms, even as India insists Kashmir remains an internal matter.

Signed in 1972 after the Indo-Pak war of 1971, the Simla Agreement commits both nations to resolve disputes through bilateral means — a principle India continues to uphold.

Asif also issued a warning about Pakistan’s nuclear stance. The country is on high alert, he said, and would only consider using nuclear weapons if “there is a direct threat to our existence.” He confirmed that Pakistan had consulted regional allies including Gulf nations and China, and briefed the UK and US on current developments.

“Some of our friends in the Arabian Gulf have talked to both sides,” Asif added, without naming any countries. Meanwhile, China called for restraint, and Asif noted the United States had so far chosen to “stay away” from intervening.

Controversy deepened as a recent viral interview with Sky News’s Yalda Hakim showed Asif acknowledging Pakistan’s role in supporting terror outfits. When asked whether Pakistan had backed, trained, and funded terrorist groups, Asif replied: “We have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about 3 decades… and the west, including Britain… That was a mistake, and we suffered for that.”

He framed the support as part of Cold War-era geopolitics and the post-9/11 alignment with the West. “If we had not joined the war against the Soviet Union and later on the war after 9/11, Pakistan’s track record was unimpeachable,” Asif said.

The confession underscores a long-standing accusation against Pakistan: that it served as a haven and hub for global jihadist networks, often at the expense of regional peace.

Air India announced the launch of non-stop flights between Delhi and Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, starting 1 October 2025. With the launch of this new route, Air India becomes the only carrier to operate non-stop flights between India and the Philippines, offering seamless connectivity through its Delhi hub and boosting tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Air India’s service to Manila will operate five days a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays—using the airline’s Airbus A321neo aircraft, featuring a three-class cabin configuration that offers the choice of Business Class, Premium Economy Class, and Economy Class to travellers.

The Philippines recently introduced visa-free entry for Indian tourists for up to 14 days, significantly enhancing accessibility for Indians eager to visit the white-sand beaches of Boracay, the stunning landscapes of Palawan, the historical landmarks in Cebu, and more.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said, “The introduction of our Delhi-Manila route is yet another step in our mission to connect India with more of the world, non-stop. As outbound travel from India grows at an unprecedented pace, with Indian tourists ranking among the highest spenders globally, the new entry rules for Indian tourists are a shot in the arm to boost tourism to the Philippines. We are happy to facilitate new opportunities for cultural exchange and economic collaboration between the two nations while bringing the new Air India to more travellers around the world.”

With its 7,000+ islands and a dynamic blend of cultural and modern attractions, the Philippines holds great tourism potential for Indian travellers. Air India’s new route also supports the growing bilateral trade between India and the Philippines, which reached USD 3.53 billion in 2023-24, nearly doubling from USD 1.89 billion in 2015-16, according to the Embassy of India in Manila.

Air India’s flight schedule to Manila ensures not only non-stop connectivity from India but also seamless, one-stop connectivity from Europe via Delhi.

Bookings for Air India’s flights between Delhi and Manila are now open on all channels, including Air India’s website, mobile app, airport ticketing offices, contact centres, and through all travel agents.

Langkawi

The story that first took shape along the Nile has now found its next expression in the lush, tropical expanse of Langkawi. This shift marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of what many are now calling conscious travel. What began quietly in the peaceful atmosphere of Aswan has now emerged as a global vision. With the launch of the Zen Wellness Resort Langkawi, a bold new chapter in regenerative tourism is being written—this time on a 69-acre rainforest sanctuary overlooking the Andaman Sea.

Rooted in the Stillness of Aswan
The origins of Zen Wellness go back to Aswan, a place where the stark contrast of desert and river creates a stillness rare in today’s world. It was in this timeless setting that the idea took hold—not just of wellness as a service, but as an experience, a place to breathe deeply, to reflect, and to begin again. Far from being a trendy wellness brand, Zen Wellness shaped itself as a space of genuine healing—not through indulgence, but through intentional living.

More than just a spa or clinic, it functioned as a hybrid of retreat and sanctuary, offering visitors a rare opportunity to reconnect with both body and spirit.
Crossing Continents: A New Beginning in Southeast Asia
The transition to Langkawi is not seen as a conclusion, but a natural expansion. The foundational wellness philosophy born in Aswan is being carefully translated into a new context, shaped by different surroundings but guided by the same intent. The Langkawi retreat has been thoughtfully developed in collaboration with regional partners, aiming to recalibrate rather than pamper.
This destination was built with regenerative hospitality in mind—where eco-conscious design meets immersive healing. Guests will find a different kind of luxury here: one rooted in science, soul, and sustainability.
It also draws upon Malaysia’s growing medical tourism appeal, weaving that strength into an integrated wellness journey tailored for international visitors seeking both rejuvenation and purpose.
Wellness Reimagined: Philosophy in Daily Life
What sets this resort apart is its emphasis on immersion, not indulgence. The guest experience isn’t focused on temporary relaxation, but on lasting transformation. Every detail, from the breathwork at sunrise to nutrient-rich meals crafted with intention, is designed to mirror nature’s rhythm.
Here, healing is embedded into every inch of the environment—woven into the landscape, infused into the rituals, and expressed through purposeful design choices. The resort’s architecturedaily practices, and even its culinary approach all reflect a commitment to mind-body harmony.
Langkawi’s Role in the Wellness Map
With its sweeping coastal views, rainforest trails, and spiritual calm, Langkawi was a natural choice for this next phase. Its increasing reputation as a medical tourism hub only added to its appeal. For Zen Wellness, this island offered more than a stunning location—it provided a platform for the kind of holistic travel experiences the brand aims to champion.
Langkawi now stands as a model for how destinations can be developed around environmental stewardshipcultural respect, and personal renewal—a template that many in the travel world are watching closely.
Back to the Source: Egypt’s Continuing Role
Even as attention turns to Southeast Asia, Egypt remains a vital anchor in this global journey. Plans are already in motion for a six-month Wellness Roadshow, traveling through a network of Egyptian locations: Almaza BaySiwaFayoumDakhlaMarsa Alam, and Aswan.
This traveling initiative aims to take the core philosophy of Zen Wellness out of the retreat setting and into the broader community. The roadshow is expected to include:
Wellness tastings showcasing local ingredients
Interactive demonstrations on integrative health practices
Educational sessions focused on daily, accessible well-being
The intent is to make wellness inclusiveeveryday, and deeply connected to local culture and landscapes.
Aswan: The Heart That Keeps Beating
The original Zen Wellness Clinic in Aswan remains not only open but central to the brand’s mission. It continues to serve as a permanent sanctuary for those seeking stillness and self-discovery. Nearby, a Creative Hub has recently emerged—designed to bring the principles of wellness into the professional world. With coworking spaces built around ideas of calmcommunity, and clarity, it challenges traditional ideas of productivity, inviting a more mindful way to work and live.
A Global Shift in Travel Philosophy
Experts in both travel and health sectors are calling this movement a transformational shift. It reflects a growing desire among travelers not just for getaways, but for journeys with depth and intention. Instead of seeking luxury for luxury’s sake, people are now searching for experiences that restoreeducate, and inspire.
This movement’s expansion is expected to have profound ripple effects:
Both Malaysia and Egypt are poised to rise as leading wellness destinations
Regenerative hospitality is becoming a defining standard in eco-tourism
Travelers are increasingly prioritizing mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being
Medical tourism is evolving to include holistic, culturally-informed healing
Not a Destination, But a Beginning
While the Langkawi resort is undeniably a milestone, insiders urge that it be seen not as a final point, but as an entryway. It opens the door to a new way of seeing the world—where travel becomes a vehicle for healingconnection, and renewal. From the ancient waters of the Nile to the misty forests above the Andaman Sea, the essence of this movement flows steadily: healing that honors both people and place.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have parted ways and lambasted each other publicly.

Trump expressed disappointment in Musk for opposing his tax and spending bill, which recently passed.

Musk criticized the bill on social media, calling it a “disgusting abomination” filled with waste.Washington DC:

Fewer friendships have soured quite as rapidly, and with as much media glare, as that of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Almost inseparable over the last nine months, President Trump and his go-to friend and later colleague, Elon Musk, had parted ways a few days ago. Now their spat is out in public.

“Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will any more,” said President Trump as Elon Musk had appealed for his “One Big Beautiful Bill” to be stopped at all cost. “Kill the bill,” Musk had said less than 24 hours ago. That bill has now passed the House of Representatives.

“I’m very disappointed in Elon,” Trump said while speaking to the American press.

ROUND 1: MUSK PUNCHES ON X

After disagreeing with President Trump behind closed doors, Elon Musk quit the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE last week. Soon after, he publicly opposed Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill. Taking to his social media platform X, Musk had written, “I’m sorry but I just can’t stand it anymore… This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

ROUND 2: TRUMP JABS ‘ELON’

President Trump has now hit back at his “friend” Elon, saying, “Elon knew the inner workings of this bill, better than almost anybody sitting here. He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re going to have to cut the EV mandate, because that’s billions and billions of dollars…And I can understand that, but he knew every aspect of this bill. He knew it better than almost anybody, and he never had a problem until right after he left (DOGE). And if you saw the statements he made about me, which I’m sure you can get very easily, it’s very fresh on tape, he said the most beautiful things about me, and he hasn’t said bad about me personally, but I’m sure that’ll be next, but I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

Elon Musk, who must have been watching the President’s press conference, responded immediately on X. This is “False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”, Elon Musk wrote.

CAPITOL HILL DRAMA AT MIDNIGHT

President Trump’s sharp response to his former backer, confidant, and adviser came after House Republicans stayed up all night to pass the President’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ – a multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks package. It was a dramatic night, with Speaker Mike Johnson defying the sceptics and unifying his ranks to muscle President Donald Trump’s priority bill to approval, reported news agency Associated Press.

Last-minute concessions were made and some stark warnings issued directly from the US President, before several Republicans dropped their opposition to the Bill.

The voting over the bill was just as dramatic. Shortly after midnight in Washington DC, The House began the debate with the Speaker’s approval. Capitol Hill was abuzz till dawn, when the Bill was put to vote. The result: it passed with the slimmest of margins – 215-214. The Democrats vehemently opposed the Bill, and disgruntled Republicans were told to fall in line.

According to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, the bill will unleash trillions of dollars in tax cuts and slash spending, but also spike deficits by $2.4 trillion over a decade and leave some 10.9 million more US citizens without health insurance.

TESLA BRACES FOR IMPACT, THE GLOVES COME OFF

Within hours of the Bill being passed, Elon Musk’s EV company Tesla faced the heat, with stocks plunging over 8 per cent. As per President Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, tax cuts, which were given to electric vehicle manufacturers, have been lifted.

The gloves are now off in the fight between the world’s most powerful person and the world’s richest person, with the US President suggesting that Elon Musk is having a withdrawal syndrome about leaving the White House. Elon has “Trump derangement syndrome”, Trump added.

ROUND 3: REMINDERS TO THE ‘UNGRATEFUL’ PRESIDENT

Within minutes, Elon Musk lambasted his former boss for his “ingratitude”, reminding Donald Trump that it was because of him (Musk) that Trump won the election. “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House,” Musk said.

Elon Musk had poured in hundreds of millions of dollars in Donald Trump’s election campaign last year.

Digging out Trump’s past comments, and social media posts, Elon Musk intensified his attack on the US President with a series of posts intended to jab his former boss. In one such instance, Elon Musk took a jibe at Trump’s bizarre allegation that Joe Biden had been using a body double to hide his illness.

Sharing an old post in which he had agreed with Donald Trump over his debt ceiling remark, Musk wrote, “Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a body double!?”

He also called the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ ‘The Big Ugly Bill’, warning fellow citizens that this will increase deficit to $2.5 trillion.

On a day where Tesla faces punitive measures after Trump’s bill is passed, Elon Musk also shared a post in which Donald Trump batted for Musk’s Tesla cars, saying “Remember this?”

Observers had long wondered if the friendship between the two brash billionaires known for lobbing insults online would flame out in spectacular fashion. It did, in less than a year.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cut the repo rate for the third time this year by 50 basis points. With the latest cut, the repo rate now stands at 5.5%. The cut in the repo rate brings cheers for borrowers but bad news for fixed deposit investors. The banks have been cutting the FD interest rate as the RBI started reducing the repo rate at the start of 2025. Along with the repo rate cut, the RBI has also cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 1%. There is also a change of stance from accommodative to neutral in today’s RBI MPC meeting.

How has FD rate been impacted since February 2025?

The RBI has cut the repo rate by 25 bps each time in February and April 2025. Due to two successive rate cuts, banks have aggressively reduced FD interest rates.

According to the SBI Research report, “FD rates have been reduced in the range of 30-70 bps since February 2025.”

Along with the reduction in fixed deposit interest rates, banks are also reducing the interest rates on savings bank accounts. “Banks have already reduced interest rates on savings accounts to floor rate of 2.70%,” said SBI in its report. How much FD rate cuts should investors expect in future?

The RBI has cut the repo rate three times till now. According to the SBI research report, “Transmission to deposit rates is expected to be strong in the coming quarters. 100 bps repo rate cuts are expected in FY26.”

This is likely to happen if the CPI inflation remains below the medium-term target of 4%, supporting growth in fighting cyclical downturns, and if credit growth remains muted.
