Grand function organized on National Girl Child Day and 10th anniversary of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ Scheme.
Chandigarh, January 24, 2025 – The Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Chandigarh Administration organized a grand event today to commemorate the National Girl Child Day and completion of 10 years of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) Scheme. The event was celebrated with great enthusiasm and gaiety at the Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42.
The Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, Hon’ble Shri Gulab Chand Kataria graced the event as the Chief Guest. Also, Chief Secretary Shri Rajiv Verma, IAS, was present as the Guest of Honour.
The main feature of the program was the release of a booklet titled ‘Sahyog: Social Assistance and Help for Your Overall Guidance’. The aim of this booklet is to increase awareness about various social welfare schemes for women, children, senior citizens and Divyangjans. This booklet was unveiled by the Honourable Governor and described it as helpful in providing information about government schemes and benefits to the public.
In his address, the Governor lauded the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme, which was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister in 2014 from Panipat, Haryana. He informed that in the last 10 years, the child sex ratio of Chandigarh has increased from 910 to 942 girls per 1000 boys. He also said that today’s daughters are excelling in education as well as in other fields of society, and are following inspirational women like Rani Lakshmibai, Kalpana Chawla.
On this occasion, the Hon’ble Governor presented cheques to the first 5 beneficiaries of ‘Shagun Yojana’. This scheme has been launched with the objective of providing financial assistance at the time of marriage of daughters of weaker sections.
During the event, students of Colleges and Child Care Institutions highlighted the importance and value of the girl child through cultural presentations. Their artistic presentations entertained the audience as well as gave the message of gender equality and empowerment of the girl child.
The programme provided an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme over the past decade and to reiterate the collective resolve to continuously strive for the upliftment of the girl child and women in society.
Shri Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India, Secretary Social Welfare , Smt. Anuradha S Chagti, Director Social Welfare, Smt.Palika Arora and other officials of the Chandigarh Administration were also present during the event.
