“Make AI in India”: Government Unveils ₹75,000 Crore Plan to Build Sovereign AI and Compete Globally
NEW DELHI – In a landmark move aimed at establishing India as a global AI powerhouse, the Central Government today announced the “Make AI in India” initiative, a comprehensive ₹75,000 crore mission to build sovereign artificial intelligence capabilities, foster domestic innovation, and create a world-class talent pool.
The multi-pronged strategy, unveiled by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, focuses on creating large-scale computing infrastructure within the country, including developing India’s own foundational large language models (LLMs). The plan aims to reduce India’s reliance on technology from foreign giants like Google and OpenAI and to create AI solutions tailored to the unique linguistic and cultural diversity of the Indian market.
A significant portion of the funds will be allocated to a public-private partnership model to set up state-of-the-art supercomputing centers dedicated to AI development. These centers will be made accessible to Indian startups, academic institutions, and researchers at subsidized rates.

“This is not just about competing; it’s about creating and leading,” said a senior ministry official at the launch event. “India has the data, the talent, and the scale. With this mission, we are providing the critical infrastructure and policy support to build a globally competitive AI ecosystem right here in India.”
Key highlights of the initiative include:
Sovereign AI Infrastructure: Development of large-scale GPU clusters and supercomputers on Indian soil.
India-Specific LLMs: Funding for the creation of foundational AI models trained on diverse Indian languages and datasets.
AI Skill Development: A national program to upskill over one million students and professionals in AI and data science over the next three years.
Startup Incentives: A dedicated fund to provide grants and support to innovative Indian AI startups.
The move is being hailed by the tech industry as a transformative step that will position India to capture a significant share of the global AI market, which is projected to exceed a trillion dollars by the end of the decade.
