Monsoon Fury Unleashed: Dehradun on Red Alert as Schools Close; Assam & Manipur Cut Off by Devastating Floods

Severe monsoon rains trigger devastating floods across North and Northeast India. Dehradun is on red alert with schools closed due to landslide risk, while thousands are stranded in Assam and Manipur as villages are cut off. Rescue operations are underway.

NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI – A ferocious spell of late monsoon rain is wreaking havoc across North and Northeast India, triggering widespread floods, landslides, and bringing life to a standstill for millions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its highest “red alert” for Dehradun in Uttarakhand, while vast regions of Assam and Manipur are submerged, with countless villages completely cut off from the mainland.
Emergency response teams have been deployed as authorities scramble to conduct rescue and relief operations in the face of continuous downpours and rising water levels.
Uttarakhand on High Alert: Dehradun Under “Red Alert”
The situation is particularly grim in the northern state of Uttarakhand, where the capital city of Dehradun has been placed under a “red alert.” This signifies a warning for authorities to take immediate action to prevent loss of life and property from extreme weather conditions.
In response to the severe threat, the district administration has ordered the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centers as a precautionary measure. Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been urged to move to safer locations. The city is grappling with severe waterlogging, while the incessant rainfall has dangerously destabilized the fragile Himalayan terrain, leading to a high risk of landslides that could sever critical road links.
“We are facing a dual threat of urban flooding and landslides,” a senior official from the State Disaster Management Authority stated. “Our teams are on the ground, and we are monitoring the situation 24/7.”
Northeast Submerged: Assam and Manipur Battle Severe Floods
The scene in Northeast India is equally dire. In Assam, the perennial sorrow of floods has returned with a vengeance. Relentless downpours have caused the Brahmaputra and its tributaries to swell, breaching embankments and inundating hundreds of villages.
Initial reports indicate catastrophic damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and standing crops. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless and are taking refuge in temporary shelters. Communication lines are down in many areas, making it difficult to ascertain the full extent of the damage.
Similarly, in Manipur, heavy rains have triggered flash floods and landslides, particularly in the hilly districts. Major rivers in the state are flowing above the danger mark, and key highways have been blocked, cutting off entire communities.
Massive Rescue and Relief Operations Underway
In response to the escalating crisis, both central and state agencies have launched extensive rescue and relief operations.
NDRF and SDRF Deployment: Multiple teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to the worst-hit areas.
Evacuation Efforts: Rescuers are using inflatable boats to evacuate stranded villagers, prioritizing the elderly, women, and children.
Relief Camps: State governments are setting up relief camps to provide food, clean drinking water, and medical assistance to the displaced populations.
However, the ongoing rainfall is severely hampering these efforts, making it challenging for rescue teams to reach the most remote and inaccessible locations. The primary focus remains on saving lives as the weather forecast predicts more rain in the coming 48 hours.
