Pro-People Governance in Action:
DM Steps Into Slums for PMAY Verification
Bissamcuttack: (5/2/25)
In a rare and commendable display of governance that directly connects with the people, District Collector Rayagad made an unannounced visit to the slums of Bissamcuttack to personally oversee the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) verification process. Her visit, marked by direct interactions with the underprivileged, has been widely appreciated, as no District Magistrate had ever visited these areas to witness the living conditions firsthand.
As part of her outreach, collector Rayagada initiated the verification process by meeting a differently-abled elderly woman from Sana Sahi, a visually impaired lady who had recently received personal assistance from an Assistant Engineer in her department. She was deeply moved by the dire living conditions in the slums and expressed her determination to ensure that every deserving individual benefits from the scheme.
“PMAY is a transformative initiative aimed at providing pucca houses to every eligible beneficiary. The vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister is to ensure that no one is left behind, and our administration will work tirelessly to fulfill that vision,” Rayagada Collector stated while addressing the media.
The District Collector also directed the BDO to conduct a thorough survey to ensure that no deserving applicant is left out. Her engagement with the people not only provided immediate hope but also underscored a shift toward accountable and responsive governance.
The surprise visit drew a significant crowd, with people hailing it as a landmark moment in Bissamcuttack history. Many slum dwellers, who have struggled for years without proper housing, expressed renewed hope after the visit. In an inspiring move, Ms. Patwari also encouraged the young Assistant Engineer in her administration for taking proactive steps in improving the lives of the marginalized. Her hands on approach and commitment to grassroots development are being seen as a strong assurance of pro-people governance in Rayagada district.
This visit marks a turning point for the slum dwellers of Bissamcuttack, who have long endured hardship without adequate attention. With the Collector cum District Magistrate’s intervention and strict monitoring, there is now newfound optimism that housing and other basic amenities will finally reach those who need them the most.
