Spelling Blunder at Panjab University Convocation: Was It a Mistake or Intentional?
Even though Pakistan’s University of the Punjab and India’s Panjab University, Chandigarh, are separate institutions, their roots trace back to the same origin. However, the key difference lies in just one letter—Pakistan’s university starts with “PUN,” while Chandigarh’s university starts with “PAN.” But with the current state of affairs, even this distinction seems to be fading.
On March 12, 2025, thousands of students received their degrees at Panjab University’s convocation, wearing jackets that shockingly displayed the university’s name as “PUNJAB UNIVERSITY” instead of “PANJAB UNIVERSITY.” This cannot be dismissed as a typographical error in a document—it is an alteration of the official university emblem, which appears to be a deliberate act. The critical question is: Who is responsible for this change? Was it the university administration, the contractor, or the rental company providing these jackets? Did they act on their own, or was this approved by the university?
Such irregularities are not new to Panjab University. Governance norms and regulations have been ignored repeatedly. The university is legally governed by a 91-member democratic body (Senate), yet since October 31, 2024, the administration has been functioning without holding Senate elections. Instead, officials have taken unilateral control, with some individuals—such as Professor Y.P. Verma—occupying key positions like Registrar without a proper selection process.
If university laws, democracy, and governance structures can be disregarded so easily, then changing the institution’s name on convocation jackets is hardly surprising. Anything can happen!
Fortunately, this mistake is visible to all. Had it required an RTI inquiry to uncover the truth, the university’s Registrar and Information Officer would likely have suppressed it, as they have done in many past cases.
The big question now: Will there be an investigation into this blunder, or will it be covered up like many other scams and irregularities at Panjab University? Only time will tell.

पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय के कन्वोकेशन में नाम का हेरफेर: गलती या सोची-समझी चाल?
भले ही पाकिस्तान की यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ द पंजाब और भारत की पंजाब यूनिवर्सिटी, चंडीगढ़ दो अलग-अलग संस्थान हैं, लेकिन उनकी जड़ें एक ही स्रोत से जुड़ी हैं। दोनों में अंतर सिर्फ एक अक्षर का है—पाकिस्तान की यूनिवर्सिटी PUN से शुरू होती है, जबकि चंडीगढ़ की यूनिवर्सिटी PAN से। लेकिन वर्तमान हालात को देखते हुए, यह फर्क भी मिटता हुआ दिख रहा है।
12 मार्च 2025 को पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय चंडीगढ़ के कन्वोकेशन में डिग्री प्राप्त करने वाले हजारों छात्रों को ऐसी जैकेट पहनाई गईं जिन पर विश्वविद्यालय का नाम गलत लिखा था—”PUNJAB UNIVERSITY” की जगह “PANJAB UNIVERSITY”। यह गलती किसी टेक्स्ट में होती, तो इसे टाइपिंग एरर माना जा सकता था। लेकिन विश्वविद्यालय के आधिकारिक प्रतीक चिन्ह (लोगो) पर बदलाव किया जाना सिर्फ एक गलती नहीं, बल्कि एक सोची-समझी योजना लगती है।
अब सवाल यह उठता है कि यह बदलाव किसने किया? क्या यह विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन की मंजूरी से हुआ? या फिर जैकेट उपलब्ध कराने वाले ठेकेदार या कंपनी ने यह खुद किया? क्या यह जानबूझकर किया गया या प्रशासन की अनदेखी का नतीजा है?
पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय में इस तरह की लापरवाहियां कोई नई बात नहीं हैं। यहां नियमों को ताक पर रखकर प्रशासनिक अधिकारी मनमाने ढंग से काम कर रहे हैं। विश्वविद्यालय का संचालन 91-सदस्यीय डेमोक्रेटिक बॉडी (सीनेट) के तहत होना चाहिए, लेकिन 31 अक्टूबर 2024 के बाद से बिना सीनेट चुनाव कराए ही अधिकारी इसे चला रहे हैं। इनमें से कुछ तो प्रोफेसर वाई.पी. वर्मा की तरह बिना किसी चयन प्रक्रिया के रजिस्ट्रार के पद पर बैठे हुए हैं।
अगर यूनिवर्सिटी एक्ट, सीनेट, डेमोक्रेसी सबको नजरअंदाज किया जा सकता है, तो फिर नाम बदल देना क्या बड़ी बात है? कुछ भी हो सकता है!
शुक्र है कि यह गलती खुली आँखों से देखी जा सकती है। वरना, अगर RTI से यह सच निकालना पड़ता, तो शायद यह कभी सामने नहीं आता, जिस तरह से विश्वविद्यालय के रजिस्ट्रार और सूचना अधिकारी सच को छिपाने में माहिर हैं।
अब बड़ा सवाल यह है: क्या इस मामले की जांच होगी? या फिर इसे भी अन्य घोटालों की तरह दबा दिया जाएगा? समय ही इसका उत्तर देगा।
