The 16th meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) was held today at UT Guest House under the chairmanship of Sh. Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, UT Chandigarh, to discuss the status of various road safety-related issues and review the Action Taken Report on the 15th DRSC meeting held in December 2024.
The Committee reviewed the actions taken on the agenda points from the previous meeting, which included several key updates. These updates included the provision of pick-and-drop points for auto rickshaws on slow carriageways adjoining Madhya Marg, physical segregation of cycle tracks marked on main carriageway roads (from Transport Light Point to Tribune Chowk, alongside the Mango Garden, on both sides of Purv Marg), installation of an ATC signal at the intersection near Khuda Lahora Bridge on Madhya Marg, yellow road markings in the middle of the road on Vigyan Path along with necessary road signage to prevent overtaking, provision of medians on sector V-5 roads at the entry/exit from V-4 road for the safety of road users, provision of timers for cyclist/pedestrian signal lights, repair or replacement of non-functional CCTV cameras across the city, and the re-carpeting of the dividing road between Sector 44 and Sector 45.
In addition to these updates, fresh agenda items were also discussed, including road furniture and engineering measures on the dividing road of Sector 14/25 towards Sector 25/38 light point, road furniture and engineering measures on the stretch from Dhanas Village Light Point towards Mullanpur, closure of median cuts on the dividing road of Sector 14/25 (Gate No. 3 Punjab University), implementation of “No Honking Zones” in the city, creation of a dedicated left lane for heavy vehicles on Vikas Marg and Purv Marg, installation of cat eyes and rumble strips at black spots as per the IRC code, revision of signage as per the IRC code, widening of the road at Airport Light Point, including the installation of a tabletop, cat eyes, and other road safety furniture as per IRC standards, and installation of traffic lights/ATC lights at Kajheri Chowk, Furniture Market Chowk, and the T-point of Sector 48 near the motor market, along with speed-calming measures.
Other issues discussed included the provision of extra space to store impounded vehicles, as the existing space is insufficient, the mandatory requirement for CTU buses to operate strictly on the left side of the road within the city limits, and the mandatory installation of speed governors in all transport vehicles, including CTU buses, as per Section 118 of the CMVR, 1989, as notified by MoRTH.
The timelines for the aforementioned engineering works were discussed, and the Deputy Commissioner instructed all concerned departments to complete these road safety-related tasks within the stipulated time frame on a priority basis to ensure the safety of road users.
