Government empowering marginalized communities for a brighter future

· Transforming lives of eight lakh individuals with social security initiatives

In a progressive stride towards social equality, the State government is transforming the lives of marginalized communities through a series of impactful welfare programmes. With a dedicated focus on Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), women, children, the elderly and specially-abled people the government aims to foster a society where every individual feels valued and empowered. A substantial allocation of Rs. 1,537.67 crore for general welfare and an additional Rs. 2,483.20 crore directed specifically at SC-focused initiatives underscore this vision and illuminating a path toward economic security and social dignity for every citizen.

Central to these efforts is the expansion of social security pensions, which now benefit over eight lakh individuals across the state. The government has recognized the unique challenges faced by widows, single women and those with disabilities and relaxed the eligibility criteria due to which nearly 76,000 new beneficiaries are now under the ambit of social security pension scheme and availing pension benefits. This initiative has ensured financial assistance to all those who need it most and promoted a more inclusive social fabric to the people of the state.

Affordable housing is also one of the main agenda of the present state government, with the Swarn Jayanti Aashray Yojana offering Rs. 1.5 lakh per household to eligible SC, ST and OBC families. This initiative is more than a housing scheme. It is an avenue for stability and belonging, providing communities with the security of a permanent home. In addition, the government has earmarked Rs. five crore to equip SC/ST/OBC youth with digital skills through specialized computer training programmes and empowering them to thrive in the modern economy.

Inclusivity and social harmony are reinforced with a unique programme under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Atrocities Prevention Act, 1989. It offers Rs. 50 thousand as an incentive for inter-caste marriages, promoting unity and mutual respect within society. The government has set up eleven old age homes, 22 day care centers and seven senior citizen care centers across the state to ensure that elderly citizens are well cared off. These homes provide not only a safe and supportive environment but also the daily care and companionship that older adults need. Apart from this to make festivals more meaningful and inclusive the government is providing special allowances to residents during these celebrations. These festival allowances help foster a sense of connection, making everyone feel valued, appreciated and part of the larger community.

To support the growth and empowerment of specially-abled children, the government has introduced a far-reaching initiative called “Aseem.” This scheme offers monthly scholarships between Rs. 625 and Rs. five thousand to specially-abled students, helping them pursue their education and dreams. Additionally, to promote inclusivity in society, incentives from Rs. 25 thousand to Rs. 50 thousand are provided to encourage marriage with specially-abled individuals. The scheme also extends grant support to non-government organizations running institutions that care and support people with disabilities. Through this programme the government aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment where such people can thrive.

Additionally the decision to establish Adarsh Gram Sukh Ashray Parisar at Luthan of Kangra district stands as a beacon of compassion, offering housing up to 400 elderly, destitute and orphaned individuals. Planned rehabilitation centers for those with special abilities emphasize a comprehensive approach to welfare and address a full spectrum of needs and foster an environment of dignity and respect for them.

With each new initiative, the State Government reaffirms its commitment to championing equal opportunities and social harmony, paving the way for marginalized communities to fully engage in the progress and prosperity of the State. Through these holistic welfare programmes the government was not merely supporting communities but igniting a journey of empowerment where every citizen finds a voice and a place in the collective success of the State.
