Germany’s Tuition-Free Education: A Magnet for International Students
Since 2014, Germany has maintained its tuition-free education policy for students at public universities, which has made it a top destination for international students. While public universities do not charge tuition, students are required to pay a semester contribution, which generally ranges from €150 to €350. This fee is used to cover administrative costs, student services, and often includes a pass for public transportation.
The country has also significantly expanded its English-taught programs, with over 1,800 available at public institutions, making it easier for foreign students to study without being fluent in German. It’s important to note, however, that while most public universities are tuition-free for all students, a few states, most notably Baden-Württemberg, have recently introduced tuition fees of around €1,500 per semester for students from outside the EU. In addition, private universities in Germany have always charged tuition, which can range from €5,000 to €20,000 per year.
